MusicianMapper (musicianmapper.com) helps musicians find each other on a map. This page explains what we store, who can see it, which outside services are involved, and how to delete your data. We don't sell your data, we don't show ads, and we don't use analytics or advertising trackers.
What we collect
Your account. If you sign up with email, we store your email address and a securely hashed password. If you sign in with Google, Google shares your name, email address and profile picture with us. We use your name and email; we don't display your Google picture.
Your public profile. Everything you put on your profile can be seen by anyone who visits the site, signed in or not:
- Display name, bio, instruments, genres, skill level, gear, availability, years playing, what you're looking for, and whether you offer lessons
- Links you add (website, Instagram, YouTube, SoundCloud, Bandcamp, TikTok), your profile photo and up to three audio clips you upload (with titles you choose)
- Your approximate location and area name. When you choose "City / zip area", your position is rounded to roughly 1 km before it's saved, so your exact address is never stored. If you choose "Hidden from map", no location is stored at all.
- When you were last active, used to show an "online" indicator
Your profile page. Your profile also has its own public page at musicianmapper.com/u/your-name, which you or others can share and which search engines such as Google may list in their results. It shows your profile details and your town or city, never your position on the map, and no location at all if you're hidden from the map. Musicians are also listed on public pages for their city. Deleting your account removes these pages, though search engines can take a while to drop them.
Wanted posts. Wanted posts you write (title, details, the instruments and genres you're looking for) are public, like your profile. Each one is shown on the map near your profile's location, rounded to roughly 1 km, with your town or city and your display name. Posts disappear from the site 30 days after you post or renew them; we keep an expired post, visible only to you, until you delete it so you can renew it. You can't post while your profile is hidden from the map, and your posts are hidden while it is. Each post also has its own public page, and active posts are listed on public pages for their city and on your profile page; search engines such as Google may list these. They show your town or city and display name, never your position on the map, and the post's page goes away when it expires or you delete it, though search engines can take a while to drop it.
Email alerts. If you set up an alert, we store the instruments you chose, the place you searched from (or your profile location) and the distance. Alerts are private: only you can see them.
Private contact details. The contact email and phone number you add are not public. Only you can see them, plus anyone whose contact request you accept.
Messages and activity. We store the messages you send and receive, contact requests, the musicians you save (and any notes on them), the people you block, any reports you file, whether you want notification emails, and when we last emailed you about each person. Messages are visible to you and the other person. The site administrator can access stored data when needed to investigate a report or abuse, or when required by law.
On your device. Your browser stores your sign-in session and a few display preferences (theme, text size, whether you've seen the intro tour). These are needed for the site to work and aren't used for tracking.
How we use it
- To show your profile on the map and let other musicians find and contact you
- To deliver messages and contact requests
- To email you about new musicians and wanted posts that match an alert you set up. These emails name the musician or post and roughly how far away it is. Removing the alert or turning emails off stops them.
- To email you when someone messages you, sends you a contact request, or accepts yours (at most one email per person every 30 minutes). Message emails include the start of the message. You can turn these emails off in your profile settings or with the link at the bottom of any email.
- To read and answer feedback you send through the Feedback form. We receive your message, the reply-to address if you give one, and your account email if you're signed in. Your IP address is held in the server's memory for up to an hour to limit spam, and isn't stored.
- To keep the site safe: new photos are checked for nudity on your own device before upload, your name and bio, and the text of wanted posts, are screened for hateful, sexual or violent content when you save them, and we review reports from other users
Services we rely on
- Supabase stores the database, accounts, photos and audio (servers in the eastern US).
- Railway hosts the website.
- Resend sends notification emails, and delivers feedback messages to us. It receives your account email address, the sender's display name and, for messages, the start of the message. For alert emails it receives the matching musician's display name and instruments, or the wanted post's title and the start of its details.
- Google handles sign-in if you choose "Continue with Google". Google's sign-in button and the site's font are loaded from Google's servers, so Google sees your IP address when those pages load, even if you don't use Google sign-in.
- OpenAI screens your display name and bio for harmful content when you save your profile, and the text of wanted posts when you save one. OpenAI says it doesn't use data sent to its API to train its models.
- Stripe processes tips if you choose to support MusicianMapper. You pay on Stripe's own checkout page, so your card details and email go to Stripe and never reach our servers. We can see the amount, your email and the name on the payment in our Stripe account.
- Stadia Maps provides the map images, built from OpenStreetMap data, with OpenFreeMap as a backup if Stadia is unavailable. Your browser loads them directly, so the provider sees your IP address and which part of the map you're viewing.
- Location search is done by Geoapify, or OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service. When you search for a place, drag your pin or use your current location, our server sends them the search text or coordinates. Your IP address isn't passed on.
Blocking and reporting
If you block someone, neither of you can message or send contact requests to the other, and they can no longer see your contact details. Reports are anonymous: the person you report isn't told who reported them.
Keeping and deleting your data
We keep your data while your account exists. You can edit your profile or hide yourself from the map at any time. To delete everything, open your profile and choose Delete account. This permanently removes your account, profile, photos, audio, messages, contact requests, wanted posts, alerts, saved musicians, blocks and reports you filed. Copies may remain in our service providers' backups for a short time before they're overwritten.
Inactive profiles. If you haven't logged in for about 3 months we email you a reminder, and the site marks your profile as last active 3+ months ago. After 6 months without a visit your profile is hidden from other people. It isn't deleted: your account and details stay saved, and logging in again puts your profile back on the map. We keep a record that the reminder was sent so we don't send it twice.
You can also email us to ask for a copy of your data or to have it deleted.
Age requirement
You must be 16 or older to create an account. If we learn that someone under 16 has an account, we'll delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
